Hey fellow writers!
š Welcome back to our Wednesday Writing Tip!
This week, weāre tackling one of the most excitingāand challengingātools in a writerās toolbox: the plot twist. Whether you write mysteries, thrillers, fantasy, or contemporary fiction, a well-executed twist can elevate your story, keeping readers hooked until the very last page.
Inspired by an article from Writerās Digest, here are five essential steps to crafting a twist that surprises your readers and strengthens your plot:
š 1. Rethink Whatās āObviousā
Start by examining the expected path of your story. A strong twist disrupts that path in a smart way. What do readers think will happen? Identify that, then turn it on its headābut make sure the new direction still fits logically within your story.
š 2. Build a Foundation
A twist should never feel random. The groundwork needs to be laid earlyāthrough subtle clues, foreshadowing, or character behaviors. When the twist is revealed, readers should have an āAha!ā moment, not a āWait, what?ā reaction.
š§ 3. Stay True to the Characters
If your twist involves a major character decision or reveal, it must align with that characterās arc and personality. Donāt betray their traits just to pull off a surpriseāreaders will notice.
š§© 4. Hide It in Plain Sight
The best twists are hidden in the open. Drop breadcrumbs, include misdirections, and let readers draw their own (incorrect) conclusions. When the twist comes, theyāll be shockedāand impressed.
šÆ 5. Test the Twist
Once youāve written it, step back. Does the twist enhance your story or derail it? Is it emotionally satisfying? Ask beta readers or critique partners for honest feedback. A good twist should feel both surprising and inevitable in hindsight.
A twist should deepen your story, not just shock your audience. The most satisfying switch-ups are the ones that add meaning, reveal truth, or reshape how readers view the events of the story.
So as you write this week, considerāhow can you lead your readers down one path, only to reveal a richer, more unexpected journey?
Happy Writing!
