1. Great Writers Are Also Great Readers and Listeners

Writers and storytellers need inspiration from real-life stories, interesting facts, and detailed knowledge about various fields. Reading is essential, and so is listening to people. The best stories often come from real-life experiences. For example, Nehru's extensive works on the Indian subcontinent were rooted in his detailed study of history.

2. Great Writers Can Visualize Everything

Great writing shows the scene rather than just telling it. To describe anything vividly, a writer must observe and visualize. A powerful imagination is crucial. Ruskin Bond made the hills of Mussoorie come alive, and Kipling brought the jungles of central India to life through their vivid descriptions.

3. Great Writers Empathize

Great writing makes readers feel for the characters. As we read, we connect with them, feeling their pain and happiness. If writing doesn't make readers invest emotionally, it won’t retain their interest. A great writer must evoke empathy for the characters. Think about how deeply you feel James Baldwin's emotions as you read.

4. Great Writers Can Flesh Out from Bare Minimum

Every story starts with a basic idea that must be nurtured and developed into a complete story. A good writer knows how to do this, drawing from other sources or personal experiences to create something unique and worth reading.

5. Great Writers Are Also Merciless Editors

Every piece of writing goes through editing, often by a separate editor. However, before that stage, the writer must edit their own work. A great writer knows when to stop, exercise restraint, and unleash creativity. They must not be too attached to their work and should be able to edit parts without feeling too invested.
